A Practical Guide to Nonlinear Static Analysis

This document discusses and illustrates how to analyze infill building with an example in
ETABS© building analysis and design software by Computers and Structures, Inc. of a 2-D
nonlinear static “pushover” analysis of a six storey RC building with URM infill walls, based
on guidelines and modeling procedures given in the ATC-40 and FEMA-356 documents. The
procedures for defining the strength and stiffness of equivalent strut members used to model
infill walls are also applicable for linear analyses.
This manual was developed as part of a project that NED University of Engineering (NED)
and Technology and GeoHazards International (GHI), a California based non-profit
organization that improves global earthquake safety, conducted together to assess and design
seismic retrofits for existing buildings typical of the local building stock, such as the one
described in this report. The project was funded by the Pakistan Higher Education
Commission (HEC) and The National Academies through a grant from the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID).

UNDERWATER CONCRETE - MIX DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES

The underwater concrete technology has historically evolved largely through a trial-and-error process of constructing marine works. Many outstanding examples exist of high quality concrete placed underwater. However, failures also occurred and led to excessive cost and/or schedule overruns. These failures were largely due to improper concrete mix design or improper placement. The problems may have occurred because proper underwater concrete construction techniques and experience have not been widely disseminated. This section focuses on technical issues of underwater concrete mix design, concrete production and placement, and quality control.

Equation of three moments

Equation of three moments The analysis of continuous beams subjected to transverse loading and to support settlement is very common in structural design, and it is useful to simplify the general force method approach to this particular case. The resulting expression is known as the equation of three moments. We may note that historically this equation, developed by Clapeyron, precedes the matrix formulation of the force method...

example of final project civil engineering - AL RAHBA MOSQUE

Final year project report in civil engineering. Project of MOSQUE.

A mosque is a place of worship for followers of the Islamic faith. Muslims often
refer to the mosque by its Arabic name, masjid.
The Arabic word masjid means temple or place of worship and comes from the
Arabic root sajada (root "s-j-d," meaning to bow or kneel) which means he
worshipped in reference to the prostrations performed during Islamic prayers.
A mosque is symbolically very important to Muslims, and is a humble way for
man to recreate pure divine presence on earth. But mosques are not built
according to divine patterns (as is alleged by many other religions) -- they are
simply divinely guided. There are no very clear rules to what a mosque should
look like, indicated in the central religious scriptures.
Mandatory elements to the mosque are that it clearly must indicate the direction to
Mecca (this direction is called qibla). The indication is in most mosques a
mihrab, a niche in the wall. The area in front of the mihrab must be roofed. In the
wall of the mihrab there can be no doors.
Mosques are centre of cities, or of neighborhoods in cities. This function does not
always have to be structured, but can be connected to mentality, and the
establishment of a new mosque often makes a centre emerge. This mechanism was
strong in older days, but is becoming more and more unusual.

Structural Steel Moment Connection pdf

Moment connections are designed to transfer bending moments, shear forces and sometimes normal forces. The design strength and stiffness of a moment connection are defined in relation to the strength and stiffness of the connected members. The design strength of a moment connection may be full- strength (i.e. the moment capacity of the connection is equal to or large than the capacity of the connected member) or partial-strength (i.e. the moment capacity of the connection is less than that of the connected member). Similarly the stiffness of a moment connection can be rigid or semi-rigid compared to the stiffness of the connected member.

The rotation capacity of the structure may be provided by either the connection or the connected member.

PILE GROUP ANALYSIS PROGRAME - excel

"PILEGRP" is a spreadsheet program written in MS-Excel for the purpose of analysis of pile groups with rigid caps using the "elastic method". Specifically, the properties of the pile group are calculated, and then based upon the applied vertical and horizontal loadings, the vertical and horizontal pile reactions are calculated. There is also a worksheet to check beam and punching shear in the pile cap for a single corner pile, for the purpose of estimating the required pile cap thickness and subsequent pile cap weight.

compression members pdf

Compression members are structural elements primarily subjected to axial compressive forces and hence, their design is guided by considerations of strength and buckling. While pedestal, column and wall carry the loads along its length l in vertical direction, the strut in truss carries loads in any direction. The letters l, b and D represent the unsupported vertical length, horizontal lest lateral dimension, width and the horizontal longer lateral dimension, depth. These compression members may be made of bricks or reinforced concrete. Herein, reinforced concrete compression members are only discussed.

COAGULATION - Definition and Measurement of Colloids

Many of the contaminants in water and wastewater contain matter in the colloidal form. These colloids result in a stable “suspension”. In general the suspension is stable enough so that gravity forces will not cause precipitation of these colloidal particles. So they need special treatment to remove them from the aqueous phase. This destabilization of colloids is called “coagulation”.
